So you know how to cook, but how’s your un-cooking this summer? Taste some of the city’s best raw (or barely cooked) tomato dishes at Food Systems Network NYC’s annual Tomato Fest and first Great Tomato Un-Cookoff. This Sunday, ten of the city’s best “underground chefs” (and possibly some “above ground” chefs, too) go head to head in a battle of salsa, bruschetta and other un-cooked creations.
The un-cookoff goes down at New Amsterdam Market, where the chefs will work with heirloom summer tomatoes and non-GMO produce. Entries for the competition may be closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pick a winner — both Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice prizes are up for grabs.
The celebration will host an “Ask the Tomato Expert” table, a free tomato canning demonstration by Spicy ‘n Sweet, and tomato-based dishes from New Amsterdam Market vendors like Brooklyn Bean Company, Hot Bread Kitchen and First Field.
Proceeds from the event benefit FSNYC, whose mission is “to promote food systems that support improved nutrition and public health, increase access for all to safe and wholesome food, and strengthen and expand the regional farm and food economy.” Learn more about FSNYC membership (and get discounted admission) here.
Give those exquisite burgundy, purple and gold tomatoes the praise they deserve — just don’t wear white.
